About Me

About Me

Welcome to my website!  I created this site in order to help share what I’ve learned in life.  I’m hoping this will benefit others greatly.  If you have any suggestions to improve the site, or just want to say hi, please use the following contact form to reach out.

Early Beginnings

I have always had an interest in Electronics and Computers.  When I was in my early teenage years my father brought home an 80/88 (Personal Computer).  Being the inquisitive person I was I messed up the Operating System.  I then figured out how to bring it back online.  To give you an idea how long ago this was, it had a “Turbo” button that could make the processor go from 4 Mhz to a blazing fast 8 Mhz.  The hard drive around 20 Megabytes.  That feeling was the beginning of what took me down the path of Computers and IT.

My Dad had a big part in that by brining home a Commodore 64 when I was about 8 years old.  I played some pretty fun game as a kid on the Commodore 64 including Aztec Challenge.  We also had an Atari 2600, Intellivision, and eventually a Nintendo.

Reading Interest

I also enjoy reading a variety of others topics such as Personal Finance, Video Games, and Personal Growth. I have listed some of my favorite books on my website.  These include Personal Growth, Personal Finance, and Certification books. Feel free to check those list out. If you have any recommendations that you think I might like please contact me with recommendations.  If nothing else I would highly recommend you check out The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman

Current Abode

I am currently live in RTP, North Carolina.  I moved here for the job with Cisco and I am very glad that I did.  My brother Tim lives with me.  We live with Phoenix who we adopted from an Animal Shelter when we lived in Florida.   She is a mix between a Black Lab and a Rhodesian Ridgeback.  She is an amazing dog and you would love to meet her!

Military Service

After high school, I didn’t have the money to go to college, so I joined the US Navy.  Based on my ASVAB scores they decided to make me a Nuclear Reactor Operator which consisted of 2 years of Schooling.  Once my Nuclear Power School training was complete I was assigned to the USS Maine SSBN 741 on the Gold Crew.  It was an interesting experience serving on a Nuclear Powered Ballistic Submarine and I have a lot of both good and bad memories.  What I miss the most are my shipmates.  Those bonds will last forever.  I am very glad I went in because it really shaped who I am today.  At the age of 26 I was a Leading Petty Officer over a group of other Reactor Operators, some of which were five to ten years my senior in age. I was also able to complete my Bachelor Degree in Nuclear Engineering Technology during my service.

Education

While in the Navy I earned my Bachelor Degree in Nuclear Engineering Technology from Thomas Edison State College. After getting out of the Navy I attended Florida State College of Jacksonville. It was here where I learned that I really loved Network Engineering. I met Cheryl Schmidt who I consider to be one of the biggest mentors and influences of my life. I went on get my AS degree in Computer Engineering Technology. While at the same time getting my CCNA and CCNP.  I really enjoy learning and continue to educate myself both in my chosen field, and in other areas such as Personal Finance, Personal Growth, and Programming/Web Pages.  I update the most useful of what I learn in my list of recommended reading in the top right of this page.  I separate it by personal growth, personal finance, and CCIE.  If you know have read some of these and know of similar that I might enjoy please reach out to me with the contact form.

Employment

After the Military I served in a variety of jobs in the IT Field.  Starting with Desktop Support and working my way up to being a Network Administrator and Network Engineer.  I am currently working for Cisco Systems, Inc. as a Consulting Engineer. I have been with them for over nine years now and I really love working for them.  I have recently joined the US Public Sector SVS team and I love it!  I am learning Python, Robot, and Git. On the side I am a personal finance coach.  I like to share my experiences and knowledge in the personal finance field with others.

Personal Finance Guru

Starting in the Navy I was a Personal Finance Counselor for other members on my crew. Since then I have read numerous books on various topics in Personal Finance. I decided that I wanted to share my experiences, knowledge, and information with others to help them build a better Personal Finance awareness. The personal finance world can be confusing and intimidating and I hope to help other navigate the murky waters. It is a passion of mine and hope that I can help out as many people as I can in this area.

Teaching

My first position teaching was in the Navy. I provided training both to my division of 7 people and to the entire department which was around 60 people. This gave me the foundations of basic teaching. While I didn’t enjoy the topic it did give me the skills I would use later on. After completing the Cisco Network Academy program my mentor recommended I try teaching Networking. I found that I quite enjoyed teaching a subject that I had a lot of interest in. I certified CCAI and continued to teach Networking for the College for several years.  I found this to be very rewarding. At Cisco I provide training sessions both to internal teams and to customers. After reading numerous books and finally getting a firm understanding of Personal Finance I started providing a free personal finance course for members in the RTP area. When I “Retire” from normal work I plan to continue teaching with most of my free time as I enjoy helping others gain knowledge.
